What To Carry What Not Carry -To Australia September 6th, 2008
I have listed he items you might ‘not want to’ and ‘might want to’ miss while packing for Australia depends on the weather. I’ve mentioned the hand luggage separately.
Most of the Items listed here are usually cheaper in other countries. But if your place has got a very good exchange rate in comparison with AUD then don’t bother bringing them from your country.
What not Carry :
- Food Items
- Drinks
- Medicines (Have a prescription If you carry any).
- Dirty Shoes or any possibly contaminated Stuff.
- Wooden articles (They are checked for in customs, but usually seen and allowed).
- Cash > 2000$
What To Carry :
- Passport
- Travelers Cheque or Credit Card or Cash less than 2001$.
There are better ways to carry money. I would advise a “Travel Currency Card”. You can get these in most of the banks and are cheap, You are only charged based on the exchange rate. You can swipe it in all the shops for NIL charges.
- Clothing - Jeans, t-shirts or suits. Sneakers or formal shoes(Clean it up before you pack or wear).
- Winter Clothing - The temperature gets to min of 5 deg in the southern place however in the Nothern states it is a bit warm. So if you moving to Victoria or New South Wales, then I suggest you get a Woolen Clothes or jerkins, It’ll be windy too that makes the cold a bit severe. Also the cold weather is from June - August usually. But even now (September) It is pretty cold.
- Summer Clothing - It gets pretty hot in the summer, You’ll find a lot of beaches here to chill off. Casual loose shirts , t-shirts khakis and jeans should do good enough.
- Any Officialy required documents.
- A Driver’s License. You can rent a car at the airport. In the airports you have shuttle services to City Center so check for them.
- Electrical Adapters. The Australian plugs are designed differently as shown in the image below.
You can get the converters at about 5$ - 10$.
- A 3g mobile would be better although the older ones do work in a Vodophone connection. The prepaid cards are available in the Airport. If you are staying long, then it is better to get one here a Nokia N-95 8gb with connection will cost abot 49$ a month(1-2yr contract). Don’t forget the CHARGER.
- Dictionary
- Umbrella, It often drizzles in winter too.
- Electronic gadgets. Check for prices here - Dick Smith
- Laptops and other electronics are cheap but not as cheap as you can get in U.S or CHINA( I don’t think any place could beat China in this.)
- Camera.
- Spare batteries or chargers.
- Bring you Contact Lenses. Don’t buy them here it’s pretty expensive. But the cleaning solutions are cheap so don’t carry a huge one.
- If you are staying long then cooking utensils. You can get a rice cooker for about 50$ here. Also most of the rental properties come furbished so don’t pack too much.
Hand Luggege :
- Passport
- Documents
- Credit Cards and money
- Camera
- Laptop
- Ticket
- Mobile Phone(if any)
- Medicines with prescription.

@cnu .. Most of the students here are Asian all of them carry an electronic dictionary they type almost every word on book to get the meaning, so might be quite necessary for them also You need to learn the aussie slang a bit , for instance when you go to the suburbs and ask for the bill for a purchase you’ll see them staring at you Its called a ‘docket’ see more words @ http://www.koalanet.com.au/australian-slang.html
